Interior Architecture students: Concepts and designs for the wall area

This is a ‘live’ project commissioned by the Watford branch of the global financial advisory company KPMG. It involves the design and creation of artworks (applied arts) and spaces (IAD) that will be used in the current refit of the building. The project is designed to enable you to develop exploratory ideas and samples through to a resolved outcome for one of the specific sites – the wall area (IAD) - a wall piece that runs along a 20 meter space and which is overlooked by the 4 new client meeting rooms.

The intention is that three pieces (wall, plinth and atrium) may be produced in different media, but will relate to one another and to the spaces that they occupy. Please consider this when you design the wall area (IAD).

The client brief specifies that the works should be ‘sensational’, they state that ‘every material has a different sensation’ and that you should aim to draw out these material qualities. You will need to consider the use of texture, colour, form alongside function when designing the space/wall. The client, staff and visitor perceptions of the London North office, and of KPMG as a global brand, will be formed by their experience in the space, and by the interior architecture (wall) and artworks that are produced. The interior architecture company who is working for KPMG on the refit has put together a number of pages of source material that will help to inform you of the suggested colours and visual influences that are to be considered throughout the design process.

Practical consideration needs to be given to Health and Safety, cleaning and maintenance of the space and any application.

The timescale for this project is very short and you need to use good time management (see timetable on accompanying page) throughout.

Within all these considerations you are encouraged to use your own voice to be creative; make choices and inject vitality into the design of the space – this will be viewed every day by a large number of people.
